Travel to the northeast of Portugal and visit the vast historical, cultural and landscape heritage that the fifteen councils making up the Olive oil Route have to offer: Alfândega da Fé, Alijó, Bragança, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Mirandela, Mogadouro, Murça, Tabuaço, Torre de Moncorvo, Valpaços, Vila Flor, Vila Nova de Foz Coa and Vimioso.
There are four different roadmaps in this Route: "In the centre of Trás-os-Montes", "The rural and the urban", "A land of fantastic wines and olive oils" and "From the capital of the Manueline style to the rock art engravings of Vale do Côa".
Each roadmap guides the visitor across the cultural, religious and architectural traditions, and of cuisine, showing their history and revealing the handicrafts and natural beauty of each place.
Whether on foot, bicycle or by car, visit the small olive oil farms with their traditional oil presses, learn about the manufacturing processes passed down from generation to generation, and the current, more sophisticated processes of production. Taste some of the sweet, fruity, bitter and intense olive oils, and also the herb-tasting ones, the result of innovative processes introduced by producers.
The production of this powerful antioxidant product finds in Trás-os-Montes a favourable climate and benefits from a large variety of olive-trees, which give this essential Mediterranean product a very high degree of quality.
There are many local DOP brands (protected origin) and the Trás-os-Montes producers already export their olive oil to places as far away as Canada, Japan or the United States of America.
Take the opportunity to taste olive oils of various types, including the organic ones, so that at the end of your trip you can take back those that you like the most.
Taste the best dishes and sausages typical of the region, including the Mirandesa veal steak, posta, the Bísaro pork and the river trout.
The region is also famous for its natural parks – in Macedo de Cavaleiros, visit the Natura Network sites of Monte de Morais, the valleys of Sabor-Maçãs and the mountain-ranges of Montesinho-Nogueira –, across the mountains of Montesinho and Lombada, which you can explore on foot, bicycle or in the comfort of your car, and across the thermal sites.
